The Weight of Water is an open air performance by a cast of experienced dancers and acrobats. The stakes are high in this dance on a floating and tilting staircase. Each performer must respond immediately to the movement of each other, the staircase, and the water. Throughout the piece, the performers makes their alliances and climb against the motion of the stairs; but in this strive for power, there is revealed a dependence on one another when faced with uncontrollable elements.
In Weight of Water we see them experimenting with the balance of the stairs. With that political undertone you will recognize countless arm gestures and press positions from television. In the meantime, the six dancers save each other before they fall by the wayside, try to grab a podium for themselves, take others off the stage or get that last opponent with great difficulty and reluctance on the same side. Róisín Harten, Francesco Barba and Fynn Neb in particular stand out as world leaders who perform impressive acrobatic feats.
Every movement on the stairs demands a reaction from all the dancers, so something has to happen everywhere at once. An interesting challenge for choreographer Meuthen, who has succeeded well in uniting the tension-building of circus and the eloquence of dance in this three-quarter-hour spectacle. […] The six’s collaboration allows Triomf to move wildly up and down, come into perfect balance, lift or make someone fall. Each moment of ‘unity’ gets a careful build-up, so that you always get that fine ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ feeling when something has succeeded.
